General Echuca-Moama Information

Echua-Moama is known as the paddlesteamer capital of Australia and is situated on the legendary Murray RiverEchuca is located in Victoria, while across the river, Moama is located in New South Wales.

Both towns were established around 1853.

When the railway was developed in 1864, Echuca became Australia’s second largest port, with Port Melbourne being the biggest.

Paddlesteamers traded along the Murray River transporting wool to the Port of Melbourne which was then exported to London.  The paddlesteamers also shipped their cargoes along the Darling and the Murrumbidgee Rivers almost as far as the Queensland border.

The town flourished and resulted in a booming township that had around 80 pubs, brothels and breweries.

One of Echuca’s landmarks is a huge three storey Redgum wharf, which is now home to the world's largest collection of paddlesteamers

The rich colonial heritage of Echuca has been preserved thanks to faithful restoration of the town buildings and public areas.

Echuca is the ideal place for a relaxed holiday and offers lots things to discover and experience.  It has wonderful weather, high quality accommodation and excellent dining facilities.
